Find your happy Pase: A Guide to Embracing Your Inner Forrest GumpComment Count0May 3, 2024

Running. The word alone can evoke a mix of excitement, dread, or a nostalgic memory of gasping for air during high school track practice. But running isn’t just for ultra-marathoners or those mythical creatures who sprint up mountains for fun. It’s for anyone who wants to lace up their shoes, step outside, and feel the wind on their face. Whether you’re a seasoned sprinter or someone who only runs when the ice cream truck is leaving, I’m here to show you that running can be an adventure, a stress reliever, and a source of pure joy. Here’s how I got started.

Start with Small Steps, baby girl

You don’t have to run a marathon to be a runner. In fact, let’s start with something simple, like running to the end of your street. If that’s too much, run to the end of your driveway. The key is to begin. Starting small allows you to build confidence and momentum without feeling overwhelmed. Trust me, no one is keeping score on your distance—except maybe your Fitbit, and it’s pretty chill about it.

Find Your “Why”

Everyone has a reason to run. Maybe you want to get fit, de-stress, or catch up on your favorite podcasts without interruption. Whatever your reason, keep it close to your heart. It’s what will get you out of bed on those cold mornings when your blanket feels like a warm hug. For me, running is a way to clear my mind and reconnect with nature (and, let’s be honest, it’s also an excuse to wear those super-cool neon running shoes).

Embrace the Gear (But Don’t Go Overboard)

You don’t need a closet full of high-tech gear to start running. A good pair of running shoes and comfortable clothes are all you really need. That said, it’s fun to treat yourself to some fancy gear once you’re committed. Compression socks? Check. A GPS watch that tells you your pace, heart rate, and what you had for breakfast last week? Why not! Just remember, it’s about the run, not the gear. You could probably run just fine in a potato sack (but let’s not test that).

Find Your Happy Pace, Princess

Running isn’t about being the fastest; it’s about finding a pace that feels good to you. If that means jogging at a pace that snails would laugh at, then so be it. You’re not competing with anyone but yourself. The goal is to enjoy the journey, not to collapse at the finish line like you’ve just escaped a zombie apocalypse (unless that’s your thing, in which case, run for your life!).

Discover the Magic of Playlists!

Music can turn a simple jog into a high-energy dance party. Create a playlist that makes you want to move, whether it’s filled with ’80s pop hits or epic movie soundtracks. When that power song hits, you’ll be amazed at how much further you can go. Just be careful not to start singing out loud. While it might be entertaining for passersby, your neighbors might start making “noise complaint” hand gestures.

Celebrate the small Wins

Ran for five minutes without stopping? High five! Made it around the block? You deserve a medal (or at least a celebratory snack). Don’t wait for big milestones to celebrate. Every step forward is a step in the right direction. Keep track of your progress, and you’ll be amazed at how quickly you improve.

Join the Running Community

Running doesn’t have to be a solo adventure. Join a local running group or virtual community to find like-minded folks who share your passion for pounding the pavement. They’re a great source of motivation, encouragement, and maybe even some friendly competition. Plus, running with others is an excellent way to discover new routes, share stories, and maybe even grab a post-run smoothie (because you earned it).

Run Your Own Race

At the end of the day, running is a personal journey. You set the pace, the distance, and the destination. Whether you’re chasing a specific time or just enjoying the freedom of movement, remember that every run is a victory. So go out there, have fun, and enjoy the ride. Because when you’re running, there’s no such thing as a wrong turn—just new paths to explore.
